Medusirena, the fire breathing mermaid
I just found out there's a fire-breathing mermaid. HOW AWESOME IS THAT???
This is a super rough drawing- I'd love to ink this in.
I totally have a girl crush now. (sigh)

The Deer Huntress
Idea for a painting for the Love/War avatar show at The Hive Gallery downtown for April... (showing with Girls Drawin' Girls). Her antlers would be on fire as well...

Study, plus work in progress
Worked a little on my painting tonight; working out some details on one of the characters in my sketchbook and just a small color thumbnail just to hash out some basic sense of the piece.

Quick post-it drawings for tonight
Painting ideas on post-its! All themed around the LA area fires we had this year- the idea of a fire goddess/spirit (Spirit of the Santa Ana winds) and the burnt up canyon where I keep ghost.

Painting idea 12/28
Still brainstorming for the upcoming LA Myth show... been playing around with the concept of a fire demon of sorts, with all the recent fires, and combining some photographic elements of the fire damage from the canyon where I keep Ghost with some painting elements... here's just an idea...

Aftermath of the damage
I went on a trail ride to survey the damage out at the stable- pretty incredible. The landscape looks so barren and alien; saw some charred small animal remains as well, which was pretty sad. You can see some of the pictures I took here-

Fire on my mind
It's hard to work all day when all you can think about is the fires going on. Wish I could be up in the canyon with my horse and making sure everything is ok/ helping out at the stable. I heard they weren't allowing people into the canyon still due to hotspots and flare-ups, but last I heard, the horses are all ok still.

Fire Pony
One of the major fires out here in LA swept over the canyon where I keep my horse today. After a long night of looking for her in horse evacuation centers (and not being able to get through any phone calls to my ranch), I decided to try and make my up the canyon to see if I'd be allowed in, even though I assumed she had been evacuated.
The police/ FD let me through, and I saw the aftermath close-up; I've never seen such a big fire's aftermath so soon /close after a fire. There were glowing red embers from the surrounding valley/trees as we drove down the road, and when we passed my old stable (where I painted their sign- I think it's burnt up now), you could see a lot of damage and burnt up trailers. They apparently lost a horse and both their barns- this is where I used to board Ghost up til last year. The entire valley is just burnt up- the only thing that I can describe it is scalped.
But when I made my way to my current stable, all the horses and the owners (who live there) were safe and sound, but just barely. The fire came on so quickly, that nobody had the chance to evacuate, so the whole canyon was left to bunker down and fight out the fire. The fire miraculously came all the way up to the property (it destroyed the building that houses the bathroom on the premises), and surrounded the stable, but thank god spared the property, the owners, and all the horses and dogs.
So, I found Ghost and all the other horses in their stalls; she's totally sooty and covered with ash, but I'm just so happy that she and most the canyon's inhabitants were ok, since they had no chance to escape. Whoever was looking down and watching her and the others, thank you. My heart goes out to whose horse it was that wasn't so lucky down the road.

Comic-Con Inspired by: Bill Presing

Another great artist I got to meet down at Comic-Con was the very talented Bill Presing, who draws uber-cute pin-up girls. I got to pick up his latest book, "Book Plate Betties," and it's lovely! Pages and pages of cute girls in cheesecake-y poses with gorgeous and deceivingly simple watercolors.
This piece (and yes, it's me doing my fire dancing!) is inspired by Bill's work and his style - and in addition, he's also a fellow animation person, working up at Pixar (check out his Totoro piece as well!) He was very nice and pleasant to talk; and it's always great to meet another talented animation person doing art! Check his stuff out!

150th post!
Yup! it's my blog's 150th post. How happy!
In other news, saw a crazy car fire today outside work during lunchtime. My office mates dubbed it the "ford exploder." It was pretty impressive! Luckily, nobody was hurt, but we got to see the fire truck arrive and them put it out. Talk about a lot of melted plastic! (interesting fact- those "popping" sounds that you hear when a car goes up in flames are either the tires popping or the airbags going off)

drawing of the day for monday; getting behind in scanning this one, but here it is!
My day was bookended by fire; woke up at 6am by a fire in the bf's apt building with firemen, trucks, and news helicopters (thankfully, nothing serious; just lots of smoke and a small fire that was quickly put out), and finished the day having a potluck dinner with my fire performance troupe Fuoco Nostra
So this is me pondering all the fire that monday had brought me.
