What do you mean, it's closed every Sunday??

So, Sunday (Nov 22nd, if you're keeping track), Damon and I had a rocky start to our Sunday.

First, we woke up and our power went out. So, no hot water (couldn't get the pilot light lit to heat the water), so no shower, and no electricity.

Then, we were like, ok, let's go to brunch at that one place that looked like they have a good brunch. Get there, they're closed Sunday.

Ooo-k. So then, we think, fine, let's go food shopping at the Central Market and get stuff for dinner. And they're closed! And apparently, they've always been closed on Sundays. It seems we were traveling so much every single weekend, we never even noticed the market was closed every sunday.

(and there was a really gross pigeon who had a stump for a foot hanging around outside).

But, we ended up getting food elsewhere, we got the power situation back up and working, and all ended up happy : D

Old fashioned girl in jeans

Damon and I came across a crazy sight today- we were walking in the main part of Florence, when all of a sudden, we heard drums. Thinking it was a parade, we went over to the square and saw what basically was a Renaissance Faire-type recreation, complete with a drum corps and tons of people in Renaissance clothing. (of all times to have forgotten my camera! argh!)

It was really cool watching the drum/ color guard performance they gave- we must have missed the first part, because after that, they all seemed to pack up and leave pretty quickly... it appears they were helping the opening ceremonies for a weekend long New Olive Oil festival (where local olive oil producers come and sell the season's latest pressing of Olive Oil)...

Anyway there was this pretty girl who was hoisting her old fashioned Renaissance dress up since it was damp on the ground, and was wearing very fashionable jeans and boots underneath- it was a very funny paradox!

Tastes like the Renaissance...

I saw a dog happily licking the pavement / questionable piece of paper outside the Duomo today and thought it must be Renaissance flavored...

Venus

Inspired from Botticelli's "Birth of Venus"

(if you like this, stay tuned! I have a cleaned up version of her for sale!!)

Happy Anniversary!!!!

Damon and I celebrated our first year of being married back on November 16th by going out to the Florence Archeological museum (to see their awesome Etruscan collection) and out to a most lovely dinner!!!

Happy Anniversary my darling husband!!!

Studies from Loggia dei Lanzi

Sorry for the lapse in posting- internet access has been spotty, and I've been busy teaching and traveling around!  These are some studies from the Loggia dei Lanzi of some statues (you'll recognize Rape of the Sabine Women again)... These are from Sun the 13th...

Sunday, Sept 6th

Visited an Italian art store and was like a kid in a candy store! Decided to buy some Italian gouache and give it a try... definitely a challenge, but I want to figure out how to competently paint with gouaches and watercolors at least!

Here's a practice run, studying a tea can, and a view from our balcony...

And another visit to Il Porcellino...

Il Porcellino Thursday Sept 3

The Mercato Nuovo has been around since the 11th century, and used to be a silk and straw market.

Just outside the market to the south is a statue of a boar that is known as il Porcellino. Legend is that if you rub his snout and put a coin in his mouth, you’ll return to Florence. (source- virtualtourist.com )

Somebody showed us that you can alternatively launch the coin from the top slope of his snout into the small "wishing well" grate below him. All the coins are given to different city charities...

He is also some sort of fountain- he constantly has this tiny trickle of water coming out of his mouth, making him look like he's drooling. Ha ha!

Bon Voyage!

Hey everybody!  So, I'm leaving Tuesday for a three month teaching gig at SACI in Florence, Italy.  I'll be teaching undergraduate students digital 2-d animation (mostly flash), and am SUPER excited about it!

We had our bon voyage party at the HMS Bounty last night, and encouraged our friends to wear nautically themed clothing- this is the outfit I wore!

As a result of the travels, I'm assuming (hoping?) to have enough internet access/ photo posting access to continue posting to my blog, so I will be continuing my drawing a day, even if my blog can't be updated on a daily basis. I'll be trying to do lots of... Florence themed art, maybe some more finished pieces, and post updated on my travels here! Damon will also be coming with me, so you can follow more italy themed drawings over on his blog as well...

I don't leave til Tuesday, so you still get my drawing until then- then after that, the adventure begins!! : D
