RIP Maia, sassy kitty

Last summer, Damon and I cat-sat for our friend Anne and watched her fat, sassy kitty named Maia. Sadly, yesterday, she passed away after much illness at the age of 14. I have a whole bunch of sketches of her, so to honor the sassiness of the "Eric Cartman of Cats," here are a bunch of drawings of Mai Mai.

Funny story- when I was over at Anne's and when I first met Maia, I had a snickerdoodle cookie in my hand about to eat it. Maia walked over, and she was all like cute cat "what's that?" and suddenly snatches the cookie with her mouth and walks away WITH THE WHOLE COOKIE. It was pretty hilarious.

This snickerdoodle is for you, Maia!

Cleaned up Rabbit Girl study

Not necessarily the finished pose; just another study really.... (and cleaned up)

Rabbit girl sketches

I'm developing a new series of paintings for a dual show in July with artist Julie B themed "Beauties and Beasties." I'm trying to decide if I want to do an aquatic themed series (based on my animal-mermaid sketches- starfish, sea urchin, crab, sea horse, squid), or a series based on Japanese spirit animals (rabbit, badger, bear, fox, crane)

Here are a bunch of studies for possible rabbit girl paintings. I got some wooden bowls on Etsy that I want to try and paint on, hence the oval comps (thanks Ally!)

Click pic to enlarge... (hard to see when they're so light and tiny)

Pirate hooker

This was originally trying to be a Space Pirate Hooker, but she just kinda turned into a cute pirate. Ah well.

SPACE GOOOOLD!

Doily Girl

Drawing on doilies automatically makes drawings look 100X cuter and fancier!

I painted today. Hooray!

So, I got a commission from an old childhood friend of Damon's who wanted a copy of my Lotus Mermaid for her daughter's room, since her daughter totally digs mermaids. (I can relate!)

The original piece that I sold was an embellished & mounted print that I sold a year ago on Etsy. It's always weird with prints, because I want to make my "art" pieces individual, and unique, and there were always things about the original that bugged me (i.e. her hands), so I offered to just make an original painting for her based off the original drawing.

Anyway, this is it! She's not varnished yet (it's so hard to photograph/scan after they're varnished), and I'm considering putting a tiny green swaroski crystal in each of her eye to add some sparkle after the varnish is on. But otherwise, I'm countin' her done.

PS- the original has uncovered boobs, but the embellished got some lotuses covering her ladies, since the piece was originally for GDG's Nickelodeon Show, and they wanted family friendly art...

30s doll

Damon, Melody and I went on an impromptu photo shoot this weekend at Union Station. I blame a combination of being dolled up for the Doo Dah Parade, some alcohol, and a whole lotta hutzpah.

I can haz booze?

Kitten is always confused when there are drunk people stumbling around the house...

In the poppy field

Damon and I went to go see the Antelope Valley Poppy reserve and were blown away by all the GORGEOUS flowers... here is a piece inspired by it! : D

Day of the Dead PINATA??

So, those of you who managed to purchase the SUPER AWESOME Girls Drawin Girls 2010 Art Calendar will no doubt recognize my lovely pin-up art for the month of October- a Day of the Dead girl. (and YES, i know Dios de los Meurte is Nov 1-2. You'll just have to deal ; )

Well, I had a wonderful admirer of my work purchase the original painting, and ask my permission if he could one day design a pinata based off/inspired by her (to which I responded, "hells yeah!").

My friends, that day is NOW. (although, he says he's not calling this one technically a Pinata. But I like to think it is!)

Front view- love the inclusion of the bird on her head!

Check out those lacy hot pants! CUTE!
