Feather headed crown
This one's headdress is more modeled after Liz Taylor's headpiece from the Cleopatra movie than anything I found that was authentic, but man, isn't it awesome looking?
Another Egyptian
More Egyptian /scrarab beetle studies!
The scarab beetle was associated with Ra the sun god; they saw Ra rolling the sun across the sky like a dung beetle (scarab) rolls a ball of poo.
Also, small stone sculptures of scarabs were placed over the heart of mummies; they were weighed against the feather of life when the deceased was being judged in the afterlife.

Spirit fox
Was watching one of the animated Hellboy movies this evening (Sword of Storms), and was inspired by all the great references to Japanese mythology in it. I've always loved the idea of foxes being very strongly associated with the spirit world; one of the coolest places I've ever visted was the Fushimi Inari Shrine near Kyoto, with its miles of torii gated paths and little clearings full of small fox statues and small alters. I was there around dusk, and it was one of the most magical places I've ever been- downright spooky.
Anyway, this is my drawing for this evening; clearly foxes on the brain! (ps- my good friend Rafael worked on the animated Hellboy series as well- he's a greatly talented guy : D

Illustration Friday "Clique"
As a teenager, Medusa hated all the cliques in her high school and always felt left out. What she didn't know was that most of her classmates just mistook her stony glares for snobbery.

Objects from China:
Portrait of a Bronze age beast! Yes, another cool object from my favorite museum.
So now that I'm all caught up again, I'm off on another trip for the weekend (yes, I cannot stop travelling!), so unless I can figure out how to take fantastic cell phone pics of my sketch book and post them, look for more drawings on Monday! Thanks for bearing with the hit or miss updates as of late, but all the daily drawings are there and accounted for sooner or later! : )
