NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is a free self-guided tour of the galleries, non-profits and artist run project spaces located in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA). NELA has a tradition in the arts that dates back to the early 1900's when the USC College of Fine Arts was located in Highland Parkand characters like Charles Lummis & Antonio Corsi were living in the area. The tradition continues with new spaces opening regularly. NELA is now one of L.A.'s most exciting destinations to view contemporary art.

Annnd... back to the Egyptians

Feather headed crown

This one's headdress is more modeled after Liz Taylor's headpiece from the Cleopatra movie than anything I found that was authentic, but man, isn't it awesome looking?

Another Egyptian

More Egyptian /scrarab beetle studies!

The scarab beetle was associated with Ra the sun god; they saw Ra rolling the sun across the sky like a dung beetle (scarab) rolls a ball of poo.

Also, small stone sculptures of scarabs were placed over the heart of mummies; they were weighed against the feather of life when the deceased was being judged in the afterlife.

Egyptian girl study

I'm working on a piece for an upcoming show at Cactus Gallery themed around insects, and I really want to do something with a scarab beetle with an egyptian girl, hence all the egyptian girl drawings lately : D

Egyptian with Scarab beatle

While I was drawing this, I thought to myself how much I freakin' love this sketchbook from Florence. I mean, seriously, the paper has -such- a beautiful texture and tooth to it, and I love how I can work the markers into it. Anyway. It will be sad!

That's some beehive! 3/8/09

Sunday's drawing- I think this would be pretty painted with the bees having lots of gold metallic paint!

ladybug ladybug

Saw one little ladybug on a bright green leaf today on my trail ride with Ghost- struck me to see something to tiny and dainty while riding by on something so big and fast
