Sketchbook Project

Sooo... I was gonna do the Sketchbook Project, and then I didn't fill my book in time, so I have a half baked lil' sketchbook on my hands. Ah well!

Here a few drawings that never got scanned in... the theme was "And Then There was None," so I wanted to interpret it as mythological/ extinct things...

EXTINCT: Endanger Show recap!

First off, a HUGE thank you to The Hive LA,(gallery)  Ngoc Hoang of the Professional Bakist (food), Yxta,(drinks), Music Functioing as One,(string music) and DJ Clownfish (DJ) for a fantastic opening!

We had a wonderfully large turnout for the event, and the crowd had a great response to the paintings.

Here are pics of all the paintings:

My concept for the show was based off the news about a year ago pronouncing the Baiji dolphin, a river dolphin found in China, officially extinct.  I ended up reading Douglas Adam's book "Last Chance to See," which is about Adam's mission to go around the world and see endangered animals before they are gone forever.

I started thinking about the fact that an animal can go extinct like that within my lifetime, and thinking about other animals that have gone extinct in recent modern history, as well as animals on the brink of the same fate, and was inspired to create this series.

I wanted the human female presences to create counter-points to the animal subjects; they represent the cultural and historical context of each animal, and echo ideas about display, voyeurism, and the relationship humans have to the natural world.

if you missed the show, it's on view through august 5th!

The Lord God Bird

My sketchbook is an old birding book, and had this fantastic page in it illustrating the Ivory-Billed woodpecker , also known as the "Lord God Bird" or the "Good God Bird" from the exclamations of awed onlookers, since it's a huge species of woodpecker. It was thought extinct from 1944 until 2005, when there were a few confirmed sightings around Arkansas.
