Illustration Friday: Wilderness, plus bonus lady!
For some reason, when I was brainstorming what to draw for IF's "Wilderness" theme, I thought of a fox with some sort of nymph/ spirit guardian. There ya go!
and because I love all of you, BONUS DRAWING!
I started a new sketchbook with these two; it's so pretty! (and it's from florence!)

Blossom girl, fox and blackbirds 12/30
Started a new sketchbook that used to be a book about birds, so been enjoying looking at the remnant pages from that. Here are two drawings that are playing around with the old pages...

Fox in the Snow
I was working on a digital piece (teaching myself Painter), but it crashed and I lost the document (which was really coming along! lack of save=fail). Sad! That (and this piece) are both inspired by the Belle and Sebastian song "Fox in the Snow." I just love the imagery of foxes in winter- very japanese, and very fairy tale-esque.

Spirit fox
Was watching one of the animated Hellboy movies this evening (Sword of Storms), and was inspired by all the great references to Japanese mythology in it. I've always loved the idea of foxes being very strongly associated with the spirit world; one of the coolest places I've ever visted was the Fushimi Inari Shrine near Kyoto, with its miles of torii gated paths and little clearings full of small fox statues and small alters. I was there around dusk, and it was one of the most magical places I've ever been- downright spooky.
Anyway, this is my drawing for this evening; clearly foxes on the brain! (ps- my good friend Rafael worked on the animated Hellboy series as well- he's a greatly talented guy : D

Objects from China;
I saw this beautiful turquoise fox-like bronze at an exhibit in Guangzhou's Museum of the Nanyue King (they were having a wonderful special exhibit on "The Bronze Age----Relics of the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties from Henan"), and it totally inspired me to draw this relic up. I never think of turquoise as being found in China, but there you have it!
Anyway, the museum had some beautiful pieces- I was super bummed they didn't offer a catalogue of the special exhibit, but I did buy the official catalog of the permanent collection! ; )
