I think he's inspired from a giant spirit who appears randomly in the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away"... although I'm not really sure where he came from. Who knows?

At a banquet this evening, looked into the pot and had this looking back up at me! It was very tasty, although I didn't try any of the parts that had anything that could look back at me...
