Evolution of a painting

Working on a piece for Cactus Gallery's upcoming Bug themed show: I'm doing a piece about egyptian scarabs...

Original concept:

First pass (end of first day) Her skin had a blue undertone- wish I had taken a pic of it then, since it looked cool. Tweaked composition to match square wood panel, and am adding in an egyptian styled background:

Second pass (end of second day): Still figuring out what to do with the border space (black? spray gold? papyrus paper?).

Stay tuned for tonight's progress!

Annnd... back to the Egyptians

Birthday girl!

Ha! And you thought I was done drawing ram-themed Aries girls. WRONG! Plus, today (the 25th) was my birthday, so GO ARIES!!!

Feather headed crown

This one's headdress is more modeled after Liz Taylor's headpiece from the Cleopatra movie than anything I found that was authentic, but man, isn't it awesome looking?

Another Egyptian

More Egyptian /scrarab beetle studies!

The scarab beetle was associated with Ra the sun god; they saw Ra rolling the sun across the sky like a dung beetle (scarab) rolls a ball of poo.

Also, small stone sculptures of scarabs were placed over the heart of mummies; they were weighed against the feather of life when the deceased was being judged in the afterlife.

Chameleon!

We were watching "Life" on the Discovery channel on Sunday, and I wanted to draw the awesome chameleons.  I love those little guys- I've been super close to owning one as a pet before, but they really take a lot of maintenance and knowledge to take care of. Such soft little feet!

Also, Oprah Winfrey sucks as narrator. SERIOUSLY.

Egyptian girl study

I'm working on a piece for an upcoming show at Cactus Gallery themed around insects, and I really want to do something with a scarab beetle with an egyptian girl, hence all the egyptian girl drawings lately : D

Sheep girl, part 3

The Girl and the Lamb

We were watching Dirty Jobs last night, and Mike was on a sheep farm docking and castrating baby lambs.  He also showed them taking orphan lambs and getting them to nurse on surrogate goats. IT WAS ADORABLE!!  I kept saying "AW!" whenever they showed a lamb on screen. Which was a lot.

(Except when they were cutting bits off of them, then I was like "AW!" in a different way.  The lambs did seem to take it all in stride, though, considering.)

Egyptian with Scarab beatle

While I was drawing this, I thought to myself how much I freakin' love this sketchbook from Florence. I mean, seriously, the paper has -such- a beautiful texture and tooth to it, and I love how I can work the markers into it. Anyway. It will be sad!

Here are my flavors- chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and hostess. I didn't like the first pose (vanilla) so much, so I re-did her pose/hair-do (the last one).  They're all naked 'cept for little sexy aprons... : D
